If a survey was taken asking people how to get in shape, most of them would answer by mentioning things such as weight lifting, running, dieting, etc. However, a lot of them would probably ignore the most basic factor that can help you get fit, and that is rest. Proper sleep and adequate rest are just as important as any workout or diet when trying to get in shape.
One of the most important facts about bodybuilding that most people do not know is that your muscles grow while you rest and not when you are working them out. Sure your biceps might look like balloons when you are lifting but that in only because of the high levels of blood pumping through them. What you are actually doing when lifting weights is damaging and tearing your muscles apart so that they can come back bigger and stronger after they repair themselves. And guess what your muscles repair themselves when you rest.
Also proper rest and sleep is very important to achieve optimal energy levels to maximize your workouts. Without proper rest you are more than likely going to experience fatigue. This will cause you to be lethargic throughout the day which can affect your concentration and also your workouts. Because you are tired and have less energy, you will not be able to lift as much and for as long as you would like causing your workouts to be inefficient. This is why it is very important to be well rested before you perform any intense physical activity.
Another reason to rest is to help replenish your body’s glycogen level. Glycogen is a molecule, produced by our bodies, that helps fuel our workouts by providing us with extra energy. When we workout we use up these glycogen reserves and so our body needs time to reproduce more glycogen.
By achieving adequate rest you allow your body to recover and replenish the used up glycogen, thus increasing your energy levels once again. Also since your muscles have had a chance you recover and repair themselves during the resting periods, they come back stronger allowing you to exert more intensity on them. Therefore adequate sleep and rest is vital for your fitness goals as without it you will not be able to perform and optimal levels and see optimal results.
The amount of rest a person needs varies from person to person and usually depends on several external factors. For example; older people need more rest than younger people. Also inexperienced people need more rest than experienced people since their bodies aren’t not used to sudden burst of intense activity. Another important factor is your diet. If you are not getting all the nutrients that your body needs to fuel itself, you will run out of gas a lot more quickly requiring you to rest up more in order to recover.
These are just a couple of factors that influence how much rest your body needs to operate at optimal levels. Essentially a good rule of thumb is to get 8-10 hours of sleep every night and to allow at least 24 hours for your muscles to fully recuperate before working them out again. By following these simple and healthy sleeping habits you will see the immediate positive impacts it has on your body’s overall fitness.
