You might have noticed that every time you see an athlete on TV, more often that not they are in very good shape. This is the beauty of sports as not only is it fun, it is also good for your body and overall health.
Almost everyone that is into fitness and working out has at least one sport that they like to watch or play or both. So why not incorporate that sport into your fitness goals. Every sport, regardless of the intensity, will get you in shape. That even includes something as nonchalant as golf. Golf is a great back and shoulder workout. Try hitting 18 holes and I guarantee you will be sore the day after.
The best thing about sports is that it does not feel like work. You are having fun and getting a great workout on the side. In fact sometimes sports can be more intense and beneficial than any workout you perform in the gym.
Try playing a pick game of basketball, running routes and tossing a football around, swimming a couple of laps, rallying with a tennis ball. In each case you will definitely be winded and feel the burn.
Another beautiful thing about sports is the competitiveness it brings out of you. You might be the nicest guy around, but as soon as a game starts more often than not you will tend to get a little bit emotional and these emotions can drive your workout.
You will find that you are pushing yourself harder and taking your body to the limit just to get that extra edge on your opponent. Ever time you get tired, a little voice in your head keeps reminding you that quitting is not an option. Then there are the taunts from your cocky opponents. It makes you angry, it makes you frustrated, it makes you competitive and, it makes you better.
By the end of the day, whether you win or loose, you at least gain the satisfaction that you gave it your all, and your mind and body will be thankful for that effort. You have just put yourself through a rigorous workout and now it is time for a well deserved rest.
Sorry I got a little carried away. But that doesn’t make anything I said any less true. Even if you are not into competitive sports, playing a sport as a casual hobby will also do wonders for you health and physical fitness and is a good, fun alternative to your regular workouts.
So next time you are dreading the hour and a half long gym session ahead of you, just gather a couple of buddies and play a sport instead. It will be fun and you won’t have any regrets about not going to the gym.
