The Boxing Routine Workout

What do you think of when you think about boxing? Bloody noses, busted faces, chewed off ears, Rocky? I am sure a bunch of things come to mind when think about boxing but have you ever thought about incorporating boxing into your workout routine?

My motto when it comes to fitness is “different is better”. Ok I don’t have a motto, but what I am trying to say is that often it is a good idea to mix things up when it comes to your fitness regimen. Doing so keeps things fresh, new, and interesting for you and your body. Since you are constantly changing things up, your body is always trying to adapt which means that you are less likely to hit a wall where you stop noticing new results.

This is why I recommend trying out new and different workouts. Whether it is basic weight lifting, jujitsu, yoga, or anything else, the more variety you have within your workouts the better it is for your body.

Boxing happens to be a great way to change things up or add something new to your workout routine. It is a great way to shed calories while working out the whole body. If you are tired of your basic cardio routine, you should give boxing a shot. To me it is a lot more fun than running around for an hour and on top of that you feel like a warrior doing it.

Boxing Equipment

Before you begin your boxing workout, you will need some basic equipment. I have listed the gear you will need to begin your workout. The wrapping tape is optional but highly recommended:

  • Punching Bag: These bags are the big bags that boxers practice punching on and they can weigh anywhere from 40 to 300 pounds. I recommend something in the range of 40-100 pounds.
  • Hand Wrapping Tape: You can use the regular hand wrapping tape around your hands, starting from your knuckles all the way down to your wrist. Hand wraps help support you wrists as well as prevent excessive damage to your knuckles that can be caused from punching the bag.
  • Bag Gloves: These a light weight boxing gloves but unlike boxing gloves they are used for training purposes only as they provide just enough padding to protect your fists from damage.
  • If you are looking for a good place to get your equipment then check out Net2Fitness.com. They have got a good selection of boxing equipment at fairly cheap prices.

The Boxing Workout

Now that you have the gear you are ready for the workout. Your boxing workout will last anywhere from 30 to 40 minutes so be prepared to break a sweat.

  • To begin the workout, stretch your body for about 5 minutes to loosen up your muscles.
  • After stretching, hop around and perform some free style sparring exercises for another 5 minutes. To do this, just use punching combination where you hit nothing but air while moving around a bit. This will get the blood flowing.
  • When you feel all warmed up, begin throwing some punches at the punching bag. Start out with a couple of jabs to get used to the punching motion and the weight of the bag. Then when you are ready let loose and let the bag have it. This is where you have fun and mix things up with jabs, hooks, unppercuts, whatever you want. You can even try incorporating some kicks in to the mix.
  • Now if you can keep on punching for 30 minutes straight, then well you don’t need my help as you are probably in really great shape. But more likely than not you will get real tired real soon. So the trick is to have breaks in between your punching sessions.
  • Punch the bag for 3-4 minutes and then break for a minute to a minute and a half. Repeat this circuit at least 5 times with more being better.
  • Once you are done, perform another full body 5 minute stretch and you are finished.
  • Odds are you will be sweating a lot during the workout, so make sure to keep hydrating yourself throughout the workout and once you are done have a protein shake to top it off!

Boxing is great way to tone and define your muscles. It is a full body workout and also a great cardio workout, as you can burn up to 500 calories per session. So next time you want to try something different, find a punching bag, some gloves, and let it rip.
