Working out your abs is a good way to strengthen your core and build ab muscles. But in order to get a visible six pack, it takes more than just busting out a bunch of crunches. Building up your abs will do you no good if they are covered with a layer of fat. So in order to get that six pack you dreamed of you will need to burn the layer of fat covering your abs in addition to working them out.

Also you can’t just try to burn off fat from your abs while ignoring the rest of your body as that is not how your body works. When your body burns fat it burn fat from all areas of the body and not just one specific are. So it is important to focus on doing regular cardio workouts and lowering your overall body-fat percentage and soon you will be able to boast a new six pack for everyone to see.

Basic Regular Crunches

  • To perform this exercise lay your back down on the ground with your feet planted on the ground and your knees bent at about a 45 degree angle.
  • Place your hands behind you head for support and when you are ready lift your upper body up until your back is completely of the ground. Then bring your body back down until your head comes close to touching the ground. Make sure your head does not make contact with the ground. Repeat the exercise as needed.
  • To maximize results, lift your body with your ab muscles and refrain from using your hands to push your body up. Your hands are only there to support your head. All the work must be done with your ab muscles.

Bicycle Crunches

  • To perform this exercise, lay your back down on the ground. Place your hands behind your head for support.
  • When you are ready lift your back of the ground. Bring your right elbow and your left knee close together and then do the same for your left elbow and right knee. Keep doing this motion alternately until you have completed the desired number of reps.
  • As you are performing this exercise you will notice you legs peddling like peddling a bicycle which is where the name bicycle crunches comes from.

Hanging Leg Raises (Captain’s Chair) Excercise

  • To perform this exercise positions yourself on the captain’s chair by garbing the handles while your forearms are rested on arm pads. Also make sure your back is firmly pressed up against the back pad.
  • Your body will be in a standing position to begin the exercise. When you are ready raise your legs until your body reaches a sitting position in mid air. Then slowly lower your body back down to its original standing position. Repeat the exercise as needed.

Leg-up Reach Extension Crunches

  • To perform this exercise lay your back on the ground.
  • Lift your legs up in the air so that they are about 50 degrees off the ground (90 degree being completely vertical).
  • With your arms extended reach up and touch your toes then come back down and repeat the process as needed.
  • While performing this exercise, your head should never touch the ground and you should keep your upper back off the ground as well.

There are several ab exercises that you can perform to build ab muscle. Try out several different kinds to see which one works best for you. By far the best ab exercise is running. Not only does it strengthen your abs but it also sheds body fat so that your six pack become more visible.
